Richard Tilbrook at Barford Church

Richard Tilbrook spent sixty years taking photographs beginning way back in the Forties. For most of his career he worked for Jarrold Publishing and his work includes guide books for stately homes, cathedrals, museums and safari parks, as well as books on cities like York and Norwich. For twenty years of his career he was also a Royal Photographer and had photographed all members of the Royal Family.

However of all his achievements the work he was most proud of is his collection of over three thousand images of Norfolk and Suffolk churches compiled over a seven year period after he had officially retired.

Sadly, Richard passed away on August 20th 2005 and will be greatly missed by his many friends, family and acquaintances. As a lifelong reader of, and occasional correspondent to, the Times he would have been pleased to know that his obituary was published there. You can click on this link to read it.

East Anglian churches are considered by most to be the finest in England and Richard photographed over six hundred of them. It was a labour of love and this work produced two profusely illustrated books, "Norfolk Churches Great and Small" and "Suffolk Churches Great and Small". His entire collection of church images has now been digitised and can be viewed, on-line, through the Norfolk County Council, Norfolk Electronic Library.
